Revolve24 Launch X Jason Kenny
Just over a week ago, I was invited to cycle around Brands Hatch with Jason Kenny for the launch of Revolve24, a new 24 hour solo / team endurance event taking over the iconic race circuit from 19th to the 20th of September.
Revolve24 is an event based on cycling relay races set at iconic motor circuits around the world, kicking off in September 2015 at Brands Hatch. Each race will see participants take on a 24 hour race in a team relay format on closed circuit race tracks that hold huge sporting heritage.
The event was officially launched at Brands Hatch by Revolve24 ambassador and Olympic triple-gold-medal winning track cyclist (and confirmed petrol head) Jason Kenny, where Jason checked out the course and set a casual lap time of 6:16:20 on the undulating, 2.433 mile circuit.
Jason said, “I’ve always been a keen motorcycling enthusiast since a young age, so to combine this with cycling, Revolve24 is a dream event for me to be involved in. Brands Hatch is one of the world’s most iconic race circuits, so to cycle round it was a pretty surreal experience but insanely fun. To see thousands of people here racing round the course on their bikes and enjoying a weekend of cycling entertainment is going to be great, and from taking on the course, the cycling side of things won’t disappoint!”
With a smooth, pothole-free surface, no traffic and the mental challenge of picking the best racing line, the freedom of unadulterated, fast racing struck home with Jason – the perfect environment to compete.
Taking place on 19th and 20th September, Revolve24’s first host track, Brand Hatch, will provide a thrilling and challenging ride for participants with its smooth asphalt, banking corners, multiple climbs (213 feet per lap!) and exhilarating descents. Throughout the course of the race some teams could potentially cover up to 600 miles each whilst climbing 53,000 feet – a challenging combination!
Racing teams can be single sex or mixed – disabled or abled bodied and entrants can be soloists, duos or teams of four, six or eight. Aiming to be as inclusive as possible British Cycling have agreed that race licenses are not required to compete – so competition can be joined by everyone who wants to.
Non-riding ‘Team Captains’ and team supporters are also welcome to enter & attend to provide strategy, support and encouragement.
Embracing cutting edge technology, the competition starts before the race with riders able to download the official event app, powered by Map My Tracks, to compete for pole position on the grid and the ‘bragging rights’ associated with pit garage No.1 ahead of the Grand “Le Mans style” Start. By linking their GPS performance data during training rides, grid positions will be calculated based on the miles covered, feet climbed and average speed achieved in the time leading up to the event.
Once the red lights go out at the start of the race, real-time performance data, individual and team tracking information will be available enabling competitors to know where they stand in the race for King/Queen of The Mountains, Fastest Lap, Sprinter as well as Overall Champions. After Brands Hatch, Revolve24 will embark on a world tour throughout 2016 including famous motor racing circuits in the USA, France, Spain, Portugal and Canada.
